ALLAN AND NANCY ELDRIDGE

And the contribution they have made to foster services in the western region

Allan and Nancy Eldridge are local residents of Avondale Heights and have devoted over thirty years of service to the community through foster care.  After adopting their first two children, Allan and Nancy decided to take on roles as foster parents for children in need.  This decision arose after being told by authorities that they would be unable to adopt any more children.

After responding to an ad in the Presbyterian Church newsletter, and undergoing medical and police checks, the couple were registered as foster care workers in the northwest area.   The first child they provided foster care for was placed with Allan and Nancy for 18 months and was later adopted by the Eldridge family.  The care provided by the Eldridges was from anywhere between two days and nine and a half years, often taking on siblings so they would not be placed separately.

Allan and Nancy provided a stable, loving and nurturing environment for children who had often come from abusive, negligent families.  They instilled a sense of stability in the troubled lives of over sixty children and have seen even the most challenging children, turn into successful, confident young adults.  The care Allan and Nancy provided has enriched not only their lives but also that of their own children, and the foster children they have devoted their lives to helping.

In 2004 they were honoured for their efforts with a medal of the Order of Australia on the Queen's birthday celebrations.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

From the day I met the Eldridges they have welcomed me into their home with open arms, often listening to any problems and grievances I may have had over the 11 years I have known them.  They both always offered love, support and understanding without ever asking for anything in return.  Nancy and Allan are two people who I respect highly and love dearly, and wish there were more people like them around.   Unfortunately Nancy is now in a nursing home but family and friends visit her daily.  Allan is involved with various fundraising committees and is kept busy with hobbies such as gardening.  He also makes every effort to regularly visit his grand daughters and grandson.
